I believe it was about 1988 when some of us discussed a local psychology association as a viable possibility in Collin County. While we had a bevy of us around, few attended DPA meetings owing to time and distance. But the bloom was still on the rose with Charter, Seay, and oh now I remember, Willow Park hospital booming. Psychologists who sometimes saw patients there gathered in the natural course of business. By 1991 the hospital work for psychologists was going and gone; so was the common venue for camaraderie and professional development that enjoyed thereThe time for CCPA had come, if for no other reason as a support group around the continuing disaster of managed care's take over of our patients and our business along with them. Many of us felt increasingly frustrated and isolated. We were, as it painfully turns out, unable to check managed care. But we could and did circle the wagons within our own professional community. Early in 1992 CCPA was born. We succeeded in talking Richard Krusen into being our first president; the rest of us escaped with charter membership. Janet Frick saw to the newsletter; an often tiresome, thankless job -- right Dr. Wichern? Over the past years we have grown and involved other psychologists (and associate members) in CCPA and its leadership. We are fortunate to have extensive involvement in our program planning, development of workshops and other local activities. We are a grass roots organization that believes that "the whole can be greater than the sum of the parts"! Being involved in this rapidly growing community at a personal and professional level is what we encourage each other to do.
As I end my tenure as president, I hope to continue the tradition of my CCPA predecessors supporting well the common cause of practicing psychologists. Traditionally it has been done by means of high quality continuing education, some occasional political activism (thanks to Dr. Branaman), and camaraderie. I have observed that we psychologists have attained a growing cohesion whereby practice tips, persona1 support and even some referrals are comfortably shared. We are in this together; helping each other helps ourselves as!
